Minebea's Operation in Thailand |
In 1982 Minebea began manufacturing miniature ball bearings at a facility in Ayutthaya, located about 75 kilometers north of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Since then, the Company has expanded its Thai operations. Following the Ayutthaya facility, Minebea established manufacturing facilities in Bang Pa- In (about 50 kilometers north of Bangkok) in 1984, in Lop Buri (about 135 kilometers) in 1988, and in Rojana (about 75 kilometers) in 1990. Minebea's Thai operations, consisting of four production facilities, seven companies and the workforce of 31,600 employees, have now grown to be the largest manufacturing base of the Minebea Group. |

1) Installation of the most advanced machinery and equipment Manufactured at Thai facilities are precision components of personal computers (PCs), office automation (OA) equipment, and household electric appliances, all of which are becoming increasingly sophisticated in recent years. With the installation of the most advanced machinery and equipment, Thai plants produce high precision components that fully satisfy customers' requirements. |

2) Integrated manufacturing systems designed with emphasis on thorough in- house production Integrated manufacturing systems have been established that encompass all processes from fashioning and maintenance of dies to in- house production and assembly of die- maintenance jigs and tools, pressed parts, plastic injection molded parts, die- cast parts, precision machined parts, and magnets. This has enabled Minebea to supply high precision components in a timely and stable manner. (In 1989 the Company began purchasing some of plastic injection molded parts from local suppliers in Thailand for the purpose of nurturing them.)

3) Thorough employee training Before the manufacture of new products starts at Thai plants, Thai employees undergo training at mother plants in Japan until plant buildings are constructed and production lines are set up in Thailand. The duration of training ranges from six months to one year (except training for maintenance staff which takes three to four years).Upon completion of the plant buildings and production lines in Thailand, the Thai staff who have finished training return to Thailand to start new manufacturing operations with a considerably high level of expertise. This is how the Company's training system works.

4) Locally- oriented management system Japanese staff account for only less than 1% of the workforce of 31,600 employees at the four plants in Thailand. The majority of managerial staff at each division are Thai members. Female workers, dominant in the employee structure, show an excellent attitude toward work, with an extremely low turnover of less than 1% per month.

5) High export ratio of products Most of Minebea products manufactured at Thai plants are exported to leading- edge manufacturers around the world. At the celebration held in 1994 to commemorate the achievement of the export amount of industrial products of Thailand exceeding 1,000 billion Baht, one of Minebea's Thai subsidiaries was listed by the Department of Commerce as one of the top ten Thai exporters and was commended for its contribution to Thai export promotion.
